Ajay Devgn’s ‘Chauhaan’ Faces Kshatriya Parishad Ire Over Alleged ‘Weaponisation of Rajput History’

30 June 2026 (Navroze Bureau) : New Delhi: Even before its theatrical release, Ajay Devgn’s upcoming film “Chauhaan” has landed in controversy after the Kshatriya Parishad accused its makers of “weaponising Rajput history” and appropriating the Chauhan clan’s identity for contemporary political narratives. The objections come days after the film’s teaser was unveiled, triggering widespread debate on social media.

Directed by Neeraj Yadav and produced by Jio Studios in association with Colour Yellow Productions, Chauhaan stars Ajay Devgn in the lead role. The teaser portrays Devgn as a police officer confronting unrest in Kashmir and includes dialogues that have drawn criticism from various quarters. The film is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027.

In a strongly worded statement, the Kshatriya Parishad alleged that the film attempts to appropriate the historic Chauhan clan name for “contemporary communal politics.” The organisation argued that the Rajput lineage represents a historical legacy that should not be used as a political or ideological symbol in popular cinema.

The Parishad further stated that Indian medieval history cannot be reduced to simplistic communal narratives. It cited several historical examples to argue that alliances in medieval India were often shaped by political strategy and military necessity rather than religious identities. According to the organisation, such historical complexities should not be overlooked or simplified for cinematic storytelling.

Among the examples cited were Maharana Sanga’s alliance with Mahmud Lodi, Hakim Khan Sur’s role in Maharana Pratap’s army during the Battle of Haldighati, and other instances where Rajput rulers and Afghan leaders fought alongside one another. The organisation said these examples illustrate that historical events were driven by statecraft rather than communal divisions.

The controversy has also centred on one of the teaser’s dialogues, in which the protagonist says, “Tell Pathaans that Chauhaan has come.” Critics argue that the line may be interpreted as reinforcing communal stereotypes by linking a Rajput identity with a contemporary security conflict. The teaser has also attracted criticism over its depiction of pellet guns used during unrest in Kashmir.

The Kshatriya Parishad said historical memory should not become a tool for communal mobilisation or electoral messaging. It urged the filmmakers to avoid using Rajput history or identities in ways that could inflame caste or religious sentiments. The organisation maintained that cultural and historical legacies belong to the broader public and should be portrayed responsibly.

So far, neither Ajay Devgn nor director Neeraj Yadav has publicly responded to the objections raised by the Kshatriya Parishad. The production houses have also not issued an official statement addressing the controversy.

The debate surrounding Chauhaan has sparked wider discussions about creative freedom, historical interpretation and the responsibilities of filmmakers when drawing upon real historical communities and identities. While some believe cinema should have artistic liberty to tell fictional stories inspired by history, others argue that such portrayals should avoid reinforcing stereotypes or distorting historical facts.

The controversy adds to a growing list of Indian films that have faced scrutiny over their depiction of historical events, communities and political issues. In recent years, several big-budget productions have attracted protests, legal challenges and demands for changes before release, highlighting the increasingly sensitive nature of historical representation in mainstream cinema.

Despite the criticism, Chauhaan remains one of Ajay Devgn’s most anticipated upcoming projects. The teaser has generated significant online attention, with supporters praising its action-packed presentation while critics continue to question its messaging and historical references. Whether the makers choose to clarify the film’s context or make changes before release remains to be seen.
