8th Pay Commission: Salary Hike to ₹51,480, Up by 186%

Delhi, January 17, 2025 : The Modi government has approved the formation of the 8th Pay Commission. The central government has announced the establishment of the 8th Central Pay Commission, which will recommend changes to the salaries of government employees. This commission is required to submit its report by 2026. Central Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the Prime Minister has approved the 8th Pay Commission. The chairman and two members of the commission will be appointed soon. This step is crucial for increasing the salaries of central employees and the pensions of pensioners. With this announcement, there is an expectation of a significant increase in the minimum basic salary of employees. Here’s what the new salary structure may look like.

Salary Increase for Employees
Currently, central government employees receive a minimum basic salary of ₹18,000. With the 8th Pay Commission, this basic salary could rise from ₹18,000 to ₹51,480. The government has approved the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission. With its implementation, the fitment factor used to calculate salaries will increase, resulting in an automatic rise in salaries. It is estimated that the government may increase the minimum salary and pensions by 186%.

Currently, the minimum basic salary is ₹18,000. Employees are currently receiving a minimum basic salary of ₹18,000 under the 7th Pay Commission. There was an increase of ₹7,000 from the 6th to the 7th Pay Commission. Now, under the 8th Pay Commission, the minimum basic salary could rise to ₹51,480 after applying the fitment factor of 2.86. This will benefit 1 crore employees and pensioners.

Pension Increase of 186%
Pensions could also see a potential increase of 186%, rising from ₹9,000 to ₹25,740. The recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission were implemented starting in 2016, which brought significant changes in salaries, pensions, and allowances. With the introduction of the 8th Pay Commission, both employees’ salaries and pensioners’ pensions will increase.
