26 Aug 2025 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday flagged off Maruti Suzuki’s first all-electric SUV, the e-Vitara, marking a historic milestone in India’s electric mobility journey. The grand inauguration took place at Suzuki Motor Gujarat’s Hansalpur plant, where the company has begun mass production of its first-ever global battery electric vehicle (BEV).
This event signifies not only a product launch but also a new chapter in India’s automotive industry, with the country positioning itself as a major hub for EV manufacturing and exports. The e-Vitara, a mid-size electric SUV, is set to be exported to over 100 global markets, including Europe and Japan, making it a true “Made in India, for the World” initiative.
A Boost to Green Mobility
The e-Vitara launch aligns with India’s national ambition to promote green mobility and reduce carbon emissions. Prime Minister Modi praised Maruti Suzuki and its parent company Suzuki Motor Corporation for their long-term commitment to India, stating that the launch would accelerate the adoption of EVs in the country and strengthen the “Make in India” vision.
Investment and Localization
Suzuki Motor Corporation has announced plans to invest nearly ₹70,000 crore (USD 8 billion) in India over the next few years to bolster EV production and related infrastructure. The Hansalpur facility will also produce battery electrodes for hybrid and electric vehicles, ensuring greater localisation and reducing dependency on imports. This move will not only cut costs but also build a robust domestic EV ecosystem.
About the e-Vitara
The e-Vitara is based on Suzuki’s newly developed HEARTECT-e platform. It will be offered with two battery pack options — 49 kWh and 61 kWh — with a driving range of up to 500 km on a single charge (as per claimed figures for the larger battery variant).
Key highlights include:
- Performance: Dual motor AWD option (AllGrip-e) for enhanced driving dynamics.
- Features: 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 10.1-inch infotainment display, ventilated seats, sunroof, and advanced connectivity.
- Safety: 7 airbags, 360° camera, electronic parking brake, and Level-2 ADAS features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot detection.
The SUV is designed to compete in the fast-growing EV segment, going head-to-head with rivals like the Tata Curvv EV, Hyundai Creta EV, and MG ZS EV.
India as a Global EV Hub
With this launch, India is expected to play a greater role in Suzuki’s global EV strategy. The government’s support for manufacturing, combined with Maruti Suzuki’s strong market presence, is set to make India a key player in the worldwide EV supply chain.
The e-Vitara will hit Indian showrooms in September 2025, while exports will begin simultaneously, reinforcing India’s position as a manufacturing and export powerhouse in the EV era.
