Vijay Shankar on Leaving Tamil Nadu Ranji Team: “Lack of Clarity and Security

29 Aug 2025 : Indian all-rounder Vijay Shankar has revealed that his decision to part ways with the Tamil Nadu Ranji Trophy team stemmed from a deep sense of uncertainty, lack of clarity, and absence of long-term security within the state setup.

A Surprise Exit

Vijay Shankar, a senior figure who has represented India in ODIs and T20Is, had been an integral part of Tamil Nadu’s domestic circuit for over a decade. His sudden departure raised eyebrows in Indian cricket circles, considering his contributions in both batting and leadership roles.

Speaking to reporters, Shankar stated, “It was not an easy decision. I have always played for Tamil Nadu with pride. But over the last couple of seasons, there was no clarity on my role, and I felt insecure about my place despite my experience.”

Discontent Within the Setup

Shankar’s comments shed light on broader issues within domestic cricket structures, where senior players often face challenges in maintaining relevance once younger talents are promoted. According to him, the team management failed to communicate effectively about his responsibilities and future role.

“As a player, you need trust and backing. When that is missing, you start questioning your value to the side. I reached a point where I didn’t want to continue in such an environment,” he added.

A Decade of Contribution

Vijay Shankar debuted for Tamil Nadu in 2012 and went on to play a pivotal role in their middle order. Known for his steady batting, useful seam bowling, and calm temperament, he also captained the side in several matches. His performances earned him a spot in India’s 2019 World Cup squad, though injuries curtailed his international career.

For Tamil Nadu, Shankar was part of multiple Ranji campaigns and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy victories, making him one of the state’s most experienced cricketers of the last decade.

Exploring New Opportunities

While he did not disclose his next move, Shankar hinted that he might explore opportunities with other state teams to continue his domestic career. With the BCCI allowing players to switch states under certain conditions, he could soon feature in a different jersey.

Cricket analysts believe that a player of his experience will still be valuable to several Ranji sides looking to strengthen their middle order and bring balance with an all-rounder.

Impact on Tamil Nadu

His exit also raises questions about Tamil Nadu’s approach to handling senior players. The state, known for producing IPL stars like Dinesh Karthik, Murali Vijay, Washington Sundar, and R. Ashwin, may now have to address concerns of player management to avoid similar exits in the future.

For now, Vijay Shankar has made it clear—his decision is less about personal form and more about the lack of trust and clarity from the team’s management.

Summary

Vijay Shankar revealed he left the Tamil Nadu Ranji team due to lack of clarity and security over his role, citing poor communication and uncertainty. He may explore opportunities with other states.
