Car Prices Drop After GST Reforms, Festive Season Sales Expected to Surge

5 Sep 2025:  The recent GST rate cuts on small cars have brought cheer to automobile buyers and manufacturers alike, with industry experts predicting a sharp rise in festive season sales. The price reduction, coming just weeks before the crucial festive months, is expected to revive demand in a sector that had been battling sluggish growth.

Price Benefits for Buyers

The GST Council’s decision to lower the tax rate on small cars from 28% to 18% has effectively reduced prices across popular models by ₹30,000 to ₹60,000, depending on the make and variant. Automakers have already begun announcing revised prices, with Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Tata Motors leading the way.

“This is one of the most consumer-friendly decisions in recent years. Lower prices are sure to trigger a buying wave, especially with festivals like Navratri and Diwali around the corner,” said an auto dealer from Delhi-NCR.

Boost for Auto Industry

The auto industry, which contributes significantly to India’s GDP, has been under pressure due to rising costs and declining rural demand. Industry analysts believe the GST reforms could turn things around, helping manufacturers clear inventories and improve production numbers in the coming months.

“Festive seasons account for nearly 30–35% of annual car sales in India. With this price cut, we expect double-digit growth in passenger vehicle sales this year,” said Rajiv Singh, an auto sector analyst.

Market Response

Stock market investors responded positively to the announcement, with shares of leading automakers like Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Tata Motors rising sharply. Analysts see the reform as a sentiment booster not just for the auto sector but also for ancillary industries such as tires, batteries, and financing companies.

Consumer Sentiment

Early reports suggest an increase in showroom footfall and higher inquiries for popular hatchbacks and compact SUVs. Several dealers are preparing to launch special festive offers and exchange bonuses to capitalize on the momentum.

Long-Term Outlook

While the government may face an initial revenue shortfall due to the GST cut, economists believe the spike in demand will lead to higher overall collections in the medium term. The move is seen as a step towards simplifying the tax structure and making cars more affordable for the middle class.

Summary

GST cuts make small cars cheaper by up to ₹60,000, sparking hopes of a record-breaking festive season as automakers, dealers, and analysts predict strong demand and double-digit sales growth.
