New Delhi 16 Sep 2025 : A big piece of good news has come for central government employees and pensioners. The 8th Central Pay Commission (8th CPC) may be implemented soon, with the process likely to begin within 2025. If everything goes according to plan, this new pay commission could come into effect from January 1, 2026. This will directly benefit more than 1 crore central employees and pensioners across the country.
What is the Fitment Factor and why is it important?
The fitment factor is the multiplier used to revise the basic pay. In the 7th Pay Commission, this factor was 2.57, while in the 8th Pay Commission it is proposed to be increased to 2.86. This means there will be a significant hike in the basic salaries and pensions of employees and pensioners.
Expected salary hike (as per Fitment Factor 2.86):
Pay Level | Current Pay (7th CPC) | Proposed Pay (8th CPC) |
---|---|---|
Level 1 | ₹18,000 | ₹51,480 |
Level 5 | ₹29,200 | ₹83,512 |
Level 10 | ₹56,100 | ₹1,60,446 |
Level 13A | ₹1,31,100 | ₹3,74,946 |
Level 18 | ₹2,50,000 | ₹7,15,000 |
Along with this, the minimum pension may also increase from ₹9,000 to ₹25,740.
When will the 8th Pay Commission be implemented?
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had earlier stated that since independence in 1947, seven pay commissions have been implemented, with the last (7th Pay Commission) coming into force in 2016. Its validity is considered until 2026, which is why the government wants to ensure that the 8th Pay Commission is implemented on time to avoid any delay.
Employees’ organizations’ demand
The Government Employees National Confederation (GENC) — which represents lakhs of central, state, autonomous, and local body employees — has written to Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh demanding the immediate setting up of the 8th Pay Commission. The organization has warned that if the process is delayed, the 2026 pay revision may be affected, leading to growing dissatisfaction among employees.
Additional benefits: DA, HRA, and TA will also be revised
Not only the basic pay and pension, but allowances such as Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), and Travel Allowance (TA) will also see an increase. All these will be recalculated based on the new pay structure.
Summary (25 words): Preparations for the 8th Pay Commission suggest a 2.86 fitment factor, potentially increasing government employees’ salaries from ₹56,100 to ₹1,60,446, bringing significant financial relief.
