Punjab Legislative Assembly Convenes Special Session to Approve Flood Relief Measures

Chandigarh 19 Sep 2025 : The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has taken an important decision to convene a special session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly from September 26 to 29, 2025, to provide relief to flood-affected people in the state.

The Chief Minister stated that this special session will focus on presenting several people-friendly amendments to the rules related to the recent flood damages. He added that new laws regarding compensation for flood-affected people will also be presented in the Assembly and approved.

Referring to the devastation caused by the floods, Bhagwant Singh Mann said that over 2,300 villages were submerged, more than 20 lakh people were affected, and crops on five lakh acres of land were destroyed. The Chief Minister expressed grief over the loss of 56 lives and that nearly seven lakh people were rendered homeless. He further stated that 3,200 government schools were damaged, 19 colleges turned into rubble, 1,400 clinics and hospitals were destroyed, 8,500 kilometers of roads were damaged, and 2,500 bridges collapsed. According to initial estimates, the total loss amounts to approximately ₹13,800 crore, though the actual figure could be even higher.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the decisions taken during this special session will provide substantial relief to flood-affected citizens. He reiterated the government’s firm commitment to assisting the people of Punjab, especially those affected by the floods, during this serious crisis. Bhagwant Singh Mann further stated that the state government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure relief and rehabilitation for the affected people.
