May 22 : 2026 (Navroze Bureau) : Ruturaj Gaikwad, captain of Chennai Super Kings, has been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during an IPL 2026 match, adding to the growing list of captains penalised under the league’s strict time regulations this season.
The Indian Premier League confirmed that Chennai Super Kings were found guilty of failing to complete their overs within the prescribed time during their latest fixture. As a result, Gaikwad received a financial penalty under the IPL Code of Conduct related to minimum over-rate offences.
According to league regulations, captains are held responsible for ensuring their teams complete bowling innings within the allotted time frame. Repeated violations can result in heavier fines and additional sanctions, including suspension risks in extreme cases.
The IPL statement said the offence was linked to CSK’s slow over-rate during the match, though the franchise avoided harsher punishment because it was reportedly among the team’s earlier offences of the season.
Gaikwad, who has been leading Chennai Super Kings during an important transition phase for the franchise, has generally received praise for his calm leadership and tactical maturity despite facing pressure in a highly competitive season.
However, the latest fine highlights how closely the IPL continues monitoring match timing and on-field discipline.
Strict IPL Over-Rate Rules
The IPL has intensified enforcement of over-rate regulations in recent years to reduce delays and maintain broadcast schedules. Teams are expected to complete 20 overs within a designated time window, with allowances provided for strategic time-outs, injuries, and extraordinary interruptions.
Captains can face monetary fines if their teams fail to meet the required over-rate standards.
Repeated offences during a season may lead to increased penalties for both players and support staff. In some cases, captains can also face match suspensions if violations continue repeatedly.

The fine comes during a crucial IPL 2026 campaign for Chennai Super Kings as the franchise battles for playoff qualification.
