May 25 : 2026 (Navroze Bureau) : A dance sequence featuring Ananya Panday from the film Chand Mera Dil has sparked major debate online, with several Bharatanatyam dancers and social media users criticising the performance while members of the choreography team defended the actor’s effort and interpretation.
The controversy began after a clip from the film showing Ananya performing a Bharatanatyam-inspired fusion routine went viral across social media platforms. Many classical dance enthusiasts argued that the sequence lacked the grace, structure, and authenticity traditionally associated with Bharatanatyam.
Several users described the performance as “chaotic” and accused Bollywood of misrepresenting classical Indian dance forms for cinematic appeal. Comparisons were also made with performances by actors such as Sai Pallavi and Sridevi, whose classical dance sequences were praised online by viewers defending traditional presentation styles.
According to reports, the dance in the film was intentionally designed as a fusion of Bharatanatyam with contemporary and hip-hop-inspired movements rather than a purely classical routine. Supporters of the film argued that critics were taking the sequence out of context and ignoring the character’s modern interpretation within the storyline.
The backlash intensified after some Bharatanatyam practitioners publicly criticised the choreography. Dance experts reportedly questioned whether mainstream cinema gives enough respect and preparation to classical Indian art forms before presenting them on screen.
Political reactions also emerged during the controversy. Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed criticised the dance clip and said classical forms like Bharatanatyam should not be “insulted” through poor representation.
Meanwhile, members of the choreography team defended Ananya Panday and praised her rehearsal efforts. According to entertainment reports, the assistant choreographer associated with the sequence said the actress “nailed it” and delivered exactly what the makers intended for the scene.
The debate has now expanded into a wider discussion about:
- Fusion versus traditional dance
- Representation of classical arts in Bollywood
- Social media trolling of actors
- Artistic freedom in cinema
- Authenticity in dance-based performances
Directed by Vivek Soni, Chand Mera Dil stars Ananya Panday opposite Lakshya and released in theatres in May 2026.
