Delhi, 26 December 2024: Renowned writer and Jnanpith Award winner M.T. Vasudevan Nair passed away at the age of 91. In addition to his contributions to literature, he was a prominent figure in Malayalam cinema. The celebrated writer and filmmaker was admitted to a private hospital in Kozhikode, Kerala, after suffering a heart attack 11 days ago. Despite being removed from ventilator support on Tuesday night, his condition worsened on Wednesday, and he passed away that evening.

A Life Filled with Struggles

Born on July 15, 1933, in Kudallore, Ponnani Taluk, M.T.’s life was marked by early hardships that deeply influenced his writing. He graduated with a degree in Chemistry from Victoria College, Palakkad, in 1953, and worked briefly as a teacher before beginning his writing career in 1957 as an associate editor for Mathrubhumi.

National Award Winner

M.T. Vasudevan Nair’s passion for writing began in college with works like Raktam Purantha Manthrikal. In the world of cinema, his journey started with writing for the Malayalam film Murapennu, and he later ventured into directing. His directorial debut, Nirmalyam, won the National Award for Best Feature Film. He subsequently directed acclaimed films such as Bandhanam and Kadavu.
