17 Aug 2026 (Navroze Bureau) : At least 19 people were killed in drone and missile strikes across Russia and Ukraine, authorities said, as both sides intensified long-range attacks on civilian, industrial and military infrastructure.
Deadly Strikes Hit Both Sides
In Russia, Ukrainian drone attacks killed five people in the Rostov region, while three others were reported killed in the Belgorod, Kursk and Moscow regions. Four additional deaths were reported in Ukrainian territories occupied by Russian forces.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said it had intercepted 822 Ukrainian drones across the country overnight, with Moscow region officials describing the assault as one of the largest in recent memory.
Russian Strikes Hit Ukrainian Industry
In Ukraine, Russian missiles and drones struck Kryvyi Rih, killing two people and injuring 14 at the ArcelorMittal steel plant.
The company said major production facilities were damaged and operations were partially suspended. Another strike on the city later killed one more person.
Strikes also killed people in Zaporizhzhia, Sumy and Donetsk, according to Ukrainian authorities.
Kyiv Book Market Destroyed
A Russian strike also hit the Pochaina outdoor book market in Kyiv, destroying stalls and large quantities of books.
The attack added to concerns about the growing impact of long-range strikes on civilian infrastructure far from the front line.
War Moves Further Beyond the Front
The latest attacks come as fighting along parts of the front has slowed while long-range drone and missile warfare has intensified.
Ukraine has increasingly targeted facilities inside Russia, including warehouses and oil infrastructure, saying such strikes are intended to weaken Moscow’s war economy.
Spillover Into Europe
The expanding drone campaign has also raised concerns among neighbouring European countries.
Romania said a Spanish F-18 fighter jet shot down a drone that entered its airspace, while NATO reported another drone intrusion into Latvian airspace.
Civilian Toll Continues to Rise
The United Nations recorded 437 civilian deaths in Ukraine in July, the country’s highest monthly civilian death toll since May 2022. Russian authorities reported 79 civilian deaths in Russia during the same month.
Peace Talks Remain Stalled
The escalation comes amid stalled peace efforts, with both sides continuing to launch attacks deep behind each other’s lines.
The latest strikes underscore how the conflict’s impact is increasingly extending beyond traditional front-line battlefields.
