US Stock Futures Steady After Wall Street Slides on Rising Treasury Yields

21  Aug 2026 (Navroze Bureau) : US stock futures were little changed after Wall Street suffered its steepest decline in three weeks, as rising Treasury yields, higher oil prices and renewed inflation concerns weighed on investor sentiment.

Wall Street Ends Sharply Lower

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell about 1.3%, while the S&P 500 declined 0.9% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1%. The sell-off reflected renewed pressure from the bond market and concerns about the outlook for inflation and borrowing costs.

Treasury Yields Rise Again

The biggest concern for investors was the renewed increase in US Treasury yields.

The 10-year Treasury yield climbed to around 4.70%, while the 30-year yield reached about 5.25%. Higher long-term borrowing costs can put pressure on stock valuations, particularly growth and technology companies whose valuations depend heavily on future earnings.

Why Rising Yields Matter

Higher Treasury yields can make bonds more attractive relative to equities while also increasing financing costs for businesses and consumers.

The latest rise has renewed concerns about persistent inflation, government borrowing and the growing supply of US government debt. US gross federal debt has now surpassed $40 trillion, adding to concerns in the bond market.

Oil Prices Add to Inflation Concerns

Higher crude prices are another source of pressure for markets.

Oil has remained elevated amid continuing tensions involving the US and Iran, raising concerns that energy costs could keep inflation higher for longer. Brent crude was recently above $93 a barrel.

Investors Assess Fed Rate Outlook

Markets are also examining the latest Federal Reserve meeting minutes for clues about interest-rate policy.

The minutes showed disagreement among policymakers over future rate moves, with some officials seeing the possibility of further rate increases if inflation remains persistent.

Walmart Adds to Market Pressure

Weakness in major consumer stocks also contributed to the market sell-off.

Walmart shares fell sharply after the retailer reported disappointing guidance, raising concerns about pressure on lower-income consumers and the broader health of household spending.

Futures Remain Cautious

Despite the previous day’s losses, US stock futures remained broadly steady as investors assessed whether the sell-off could extend into another session.

The market is likely to remain sensitive to movements in Treasury yields, oil prices, economic data and Federal Reserve signals.

What Investors Will Watch

Key factors for the next trading session include:

  • 10-year and 30-year Treasury yields
  • Crude oil prices
  • Federal Reserve policy expectations
  • US-Iran geopolitical developments
  • Corporate earnings and guidance
  • Consumer spending trends
  • Performance of technology and AI stocks

Market Outlook

The combination of elevated bond yields, expensive oil and inflation uncertainty could keep pressure on US equities. A sustained decline in Treasury yields, however, could provide some relief to stocks.

For now, investors remain cautious as the bond market increasingly becomes the key driver of Wall Street sentiment.
