HDFC Bank Shares Jump 3%; Brokerages Bullish on CEO Transition, but Cut Target Prices on Near-Term Risks

31  Aug 2026 (Navroze Bureau) :  Shares of HDFC Bank jumped nearly 3% in early trade on August 31, even as the broader market weakened, after CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan decided not to seek another term. Brokerages largely retained their bullish ratings, while some cut target prices to account for near-term uncertainty surrounding the leadership transition.

CEO Exit Seen as Potential Reset

Jagdishan will retire on October 26, 2026, after informing the bank’s board that he would not seek reappointment.

The bank has said it will fast-track the search for his successor, with both internal and external candidates potentially under consideration. Analysts believe a smooth transition could remove a major overhang and give the bank an opportunity to reset its strategy and investor narrative.

Brokerages Retain Buy Calls

Despite the leadership uncertainty, most brokerages have maintained positive recommendations on HDFC Bank.

Bernstein retained its Outperform rating with a target of ₹1,150, while JPMorgan maintained its Overweight call with a target of ₹990. Both see scope for a significant recovery if the succession process is handled smoothly.

Jefferies Cuts Target to ₹880

Jefferies retained its Buy rating but lowered its target price to ₹880 from ₹1,050.

The brokerage also cut its FY27-29 earnings estimates by 3% each, citing risks to revenue momentum, including deposit mobilisation and fee income, during the transition period.

ICICI Securities Also Lowers Target

ICICI Securities maintained its Buy recommendation but reduced its target price to ₹920 from ₹1,020.

The brokerage lowered the valuation multiple it uses for HDFC Bank, reflecting increased uncertainty around the appointment of the next MD and CEO.

Axis Capital More Constructive

Axis Capital retained its Buy rating and ₹1,030 target price.

It argued that Jagdishan’s decision removes uncertainty around the possibility of a shortened future tenure and opens the way for a successor who could potentially receive a full three-year term.

Successor Selection Is Now Key

The identity of the next CEO is emerging as the biggest near-term catalyst for the stock.

Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha is among the internal names being considered, while reports have also suggested that external candidates could be evaluated. A credible appointment, analysts say, could help restore confidence in the bank’s leadership and governance.

Why Investors Remain Cautious

While the CEO transition is being viewed by some analysts as an opportunity, the incoming management will inherit several challenges.

Brokerages have highlighted pressure on funding costs, margins, revenue growth and returns, particularly following the merger with erstwhile HDFC Ltd. The bank’s profitability metrics will need to improve for the stock’s valuation to rerate meaningfully.

Stock Has Underperformed in 2026

The positive reaction on August 31 comes after a difficult year for HDFC Bank shares.

The stock had closed at around ₹720.30 on August 28 and was down roughly 27% in 2026, significantly underperforming the Nifty 50. The sharp underperformance has also left valuations looking more attractive to several brokerages.

Market Reaction Remains Resilient

HDFC Bank’s gains stood out because the broader market was under pressure during early trade.

The Sensex and Nifty were both lower, while HDFC Bank advanced as investors interpreted the CEO transition as potentially positive for the lender’s long-term direction.

The Road Ahead

For investors, the immediate focus will be on the speed and credibility of the succession process.

A smooth appointment could strengthen the case for a valuation recovery, while delays or an uncertain transition could keep the stock under pressure. At the same time, the new leadership will be expected to improve growth, margins and returns.
