Minneapolis Shooting: Two Dead, Six Injured Including Three Police Officers; Suspect Also Dead

3 September 2026 (Navroze Bureau) :  A shooting at a high-rise apartment building in downtown Minneapolis left two civilians dead and six people injured, including three police officers, authorities said. The suspected gunman also died.

The shooting took place Wednesday afternoon at an apartment building at 15 East Grant Street, near Loring Park and the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Police Responded After 911 Call

Police received a 911 call reporting gunfire at around 4:36 p.m. local time. Officers arrived within minutes and entered the apartment building after finding a shooting victim.

They then heard additional gunfire and moved toward an upper floor, where they encountered a haze that significantly limited visibility.

Three Police Officers Injured

Three Minneapolis police officers were injured during the response.

Two officers suffered gunshot wounds, while a third sustained an injury that was not caused by gunfire. Officials said the officers were in stable condition and expected to recover.

Two Civilian Victims Killed

One civilian victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while another died after being taken to Hennepin County Medical Center.

Several other injured people were transported to the hospital for treatment. Local reports have given slightly different totals for the number of injured civilians as authorities continued to update information.

Suspected Gunman Also Dead

The suspected shooter was also found dead.

Authorities initially said it was unclear how the suspect died. Later local reports said the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, although officials were continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

Motive Remains Unclear

Police have not announced a clear motive for the shooting.

Authorities are examining the circumstances of the attack and gathering evidence as they work to establish what happened inside the apartment building and why the shooting occurred.

Suspect Was Known to Police

Interim Minneapolis Police Chief Bill Peterson said officers were familiar with the suspected gunman, although authorities did not initially release his identity.

Witnesses told local media that they had previously seen a man associated with the building displaying a handgun. One resident said he had reported seeing someone with a firearm earlier in the week.

FBI Offers Assistance

The FBI responded to the shooting and offered resources to assist Minneapolis authorities with the investigation.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau was aware of the incident and would provide whatever assistance was necessary to local law enforcement.

Authorities Urge Public to Avoid Area

During the emergency response, authorities asked residents and members of the public to stay away from the area surrounding the apartment building to allow police and emergency personnel to operate safely.

The city later said the immediate threat had been brought under control.

Minnesota Officials Respond

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said state officials were on the ground supporting local law enforcement.

He thanked emergency responders and expressed concern for the victims, injured officers and their families following the shooting.

Investigation Continues

Investigators are now working to reconstruct the sequence of events, determine the circumstances of the suspect’s death and establish a possible motive.

Authorities are also expected to examine witness accounts, surveillance footage and other evidence gathered from the apartment building.

A Tragic Incident in Downtown Minneapolis

The shooting has once again brought attention to gun violence in Minneapolis, while the injuries suffered by responding officers have highlighted the risks faced by law enforcement during active-shooter situations.

Officials have urged the public to rely on confirmed information as the investigation continues.
