23 September 2026 (Navroze Bureau) : US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has described recent discussions between the United States and Iran as “promising” and “constructive”, while Tehran confirmed that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met the US envoy on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
The talks took place through mediators as Washington and Tehran continued efforts to find a possible diplomatic path amid the ongoing conflict.
Witkoff Confirms Lengthy Discussions
Witkoff said the US had engaged in lengthy discussions with the Iranian delegation through mediators who moved between the two sides during the talks.
He said the latest round had been completed and expressed hope that the discussions would prove constructive and promising.
Araghchi Meets Witkoff
Iranian state media confirmed that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a meeting with Witkoff.
The meeting was reportedly held at Witkoff’s request, marking a significant diplomatic contact between senior representatives of the two countries despite continued military tensions.
Iran Sets Conditions
According to reports cited in the talks, Araghchi reiterated Iran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
These reportedly include an immediate lifting of the naval blockade, the release of frozen Iranian assets and an end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon.
Trump Says Meeting Went Well
US President Donald Trump also described the discussions involving his representatives and mediators as a “very good meeting”.
He said the meeting lasted around three hours and suggested that Washington was still seeking a possible agreement with Tehran.
