Ravindra Jadeja Jokes About Becoming India’s Chief Selector After Ajit Agarkar’s Exit

8 October 2026 (Navroze Bureau) India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja created a buzz on social media after the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the vacancy for the position of chairman of the senior men’s selection committee following Ajit Agarkar’s exit.

The BCCI invited applications for the vacant chief selector position, prompting Jadeja to respond to the announcement with a cheeky question: “What the procedure?” His brief comment quickly attracted attention from Indian cricket fans, who enjoyed the all-rounder’s humorous take on the leadership vacancy.

Jadeja’s response appeared to be a light-hearted social media interaction rather than a serious expression of interest in the position. The veteran cricketer remains an active member of India’s international setup and continues to play in Test and ODI cricket.

The timing of Jadeja’s comment was notable because Agarkar’s tenure as chairman of the senior men’s selection committee has come to an end. The former India fast bowler took charge of the selection panel in 2023 and was involved in several major squad decisions during his time in the role.

Under the selection setup led by Agarkar, India enjoyed considerable success across international competitions. The team won the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup. India also secured major tournament victories during his tenure while continuing to rebuild its squads across formats.

With Agarkar stepping down, the BCCI has begun the process of identifying his successor. The next chairman of the selection committee will have a significant role in shaping India’s squads and managing the transition between experienced players and emerging talent.

Jadeja, however, would not be eligible for the position at present. The chief selector’s role requires candidates to satisfy specific eligibility criteria, including their status as former players. Since Jadeja continues to represent India in international cricket, he does not currently qualify for the position.

Jadeja retired from T20 international cricket after India’s successful 2024 T20 World Cup campaign. Despite stepping away from the shortest international format, he remains available for Test and ODI cricket and continues to be an important part of India’s plans in those formats.

His continued playing career means that a move into the selection committee is not possible at this stage. Selection committee members are expected to be independent of active playing responsibilities, allowing them to make squad decisions without conflicts involving their own careers.

The social media exchange nevertheless generated plenty of reactions among fans. Jadeja has developed a reputation for his understated humour and occasional playful posts, and his short question about the selection process quickly became a talking point among followers.

The comment also comes at an important stage for Indian cricket. The BCCI’s appointment of a new chief selector will be closely watched because the incoming chairman will inherit responsibility for major selection decisions involving Test, ODI and T20I cricket.

The selection committee will have to assess the performances of established players while also identifying the next generation of Indian cricketers. Decisions regarding workload management, player combinations and succession planning will remain important as India prepares for upcoming international assignments.

Jadeja himself is expected to remain focused on his playing career. As one of India’s most experienced all-rounders, he continues to offer value with both bat and ball, particularly in Test and ODI cricket. His experience in high-pressure international matches also makes him an important senior figure within the squad.

The BCCI’s search for Agarkar’s replacement is therefore a serious administrative process, while Jadeja’s “What the procedure?” comment appears to have added a humorous moment to the transition.

Although fans may have joked about seeing Jadeja move from the cricket field into the selection room, the current eligibility rules make such a move impossible while he remains an active international player.

For now, Jadeja will continue to contribute to India on the field, while the BCCI focuses on appointing a new chairman for the senior men’s selection committee.
