Chapter Is Maybe Closed’: R Ashwin Questions Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s India Comeback, Says Mohammed Shami Is in Better Rhythm

3 November 2026 (Navroze Bureau) Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has raised serious questions about Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s future in the Indian cricket team following the fast bowler’s disappointing comeback in the T20I series against New Zealand. Ashwin believes Bhuvneshwar may find it difficult to earn another opportunity in India’s white-ball setup and has backed Mohammed Shami for a return to the national side.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin criticised Bhuvneshwar’s performances and suggested that the experienced pacer had failed to reproduce the form he showed in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

“Bhuvneshwar Kumar—he hasn’t bowled that well; he didn’t prove his form,” Ashwin said. Comparing his IPL and international performances, he added, “IPL and here—there was a difference of sky and earth.”

‘Chapter Is Maybe Closed’: Ashwin on Bhuvneshwar

Ashwin was particularly concerned about Bhuvneshwar’s bowling intensity, run-up and pace. The former India spinner questioned whether the 36-year-old could make another comeback after struggling in the ongoing series.

“So I think that chapter is maybe closed. It’s very difficult. How will he come back?” Ashwin remarked.

He also pointed out that younger players often receive multiple opportunities to establish themselves, while experienced cricketers may find it harder to return after a disappointing spell.

Bhuvneshwar had returned to India’s T20I squad after nearly four years away from international cricket. His selection followed impressive performances in the IPL 2026, where he claimed 28 wickets in 16 matches for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

However, his international comeback against New Zealand has not gone according to expectations.

Bhuvneshwar’s Numbers in New Zealand T20I Series

Bhuvneshwar conceded 139 runs and picked up only one wicket across his first three T20Is against New Zealand. His economy rate during that period stood at 11.58.

The figures raised concerns about his ability to maintain control during the middle and death overs. Ashwin’s assessment also reflected concerns about the difference between Bhuvneshwar’s IPL performances and his return to international cricket.

Despite the criticism, Ashwin’s comments represent his personal opinion and do not amount to an official decision by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) or the national selection committee.

Ashwin Backs Mohammed Shami’s Return

While questioning Bhuvneshwar’s prospects, Ashwin expressed confidence in Mohammed Shami’s current bowling rhythm. The Bengal fast bowler has continued to feature in domestic cricket, and his recent performances in the Ranji Trophy have brought his India comeback prospects back into discussion.

“So right now I’m thinking that the way Shami is coming in Ranji and bowling, Shami is in much better rhythm,” Ashwin said.

Shami last represented India in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in March 2025. Since then, he has remained outside the national team across formats, despite featuring in domestic competitions.

The fast bowler has an impressive international record, having taken 229 wickets in 64 Tests and 206 wickets in 108 ODIs. He has also claimed 27 wickets in 25 T20 internationals.

Ashwin’s backing comes amid continued discussion over India’s fast-bowling options and the importance of experienced players in major international tournaments.

Bhuvneshwar Returned After Nearly Four Years

Bhuvneshwar’s recall for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand was one of the major talking points when the squad was announced in October. His previous T20I appearance for India had come in November 2022.

The selectors included him after his strong IPL performances, with his swing bowling and experience expected to be useful in New Zealand conditions.

India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had also highlighted the value of experience and Bhuvneshwar’s recent IPL performances while discussing his selection.

However, the ongoing series has presented a difficult challenge for the veteran pacer. His performances have now prompted debate about whether he can remain part of India’s plans for future white-ball assignments.

India’s Fast-Bowling Selection Debate Continues

Ashwin’s remarks have brought the contrasting situations of Bhuvneshwar and Shami into focus. While Bhuvneshwar received an international recall after a long gap, Shami is still waiting for another opportunity despite his domestic performances.

India’s selection decisions will depend on several factors, including players’ fitness, current form, workload and the team’s requirements for upcoming tournaments.

For now, neither Ashwin’s assessment nor Shami’s domestic form guarantees a place in the national squad. The final decision will rest with the selectors and team management.
