Chandigarh, January 7, 2025: Shiromani Akali Dal leaders will meet Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh on January 8 to discuss the resignation of party president Sukhbir Singh Badal.
Party spokesperson Dr Daljeet Singh Cheema told The Tribune that they had already sought time from the Jathedar to discuss the legal complications that could arise due to the Takht order. “Sukhbir ji has already resigned. He has already said he will not lead the party. But as per the party’s constitution, the working committee is authorised to accept the resignation. However, there are other issues like its reorganisation and the membership drive, which could only be done as per the party’s constitution,” he said. Cheema said the SAD is registered as a secular party and as per the legal opinion, it cannot take directions from a religious chief.
“The Akal Takht is the temporal seat. We have sought time to do things according to the party constitution to avoid being de-recognised,” he said.
Summary: A delegation from the Akali Dal is scheduled to meet the Takht head on January 8 to discuss key religious and community matters.
