Brain Disorders On Rise As India Grapples With Shortage Of Neurologists

21   july 2026 (Navroze Bureau) :  India is facing a growing burden of brain and neurological disorders while simultaneously dealing with a serious shortage of trained neurologists and specialised healthcare professionals.

The increasing prevalence of conditions such as stroke, epilepsy, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, migraines and other neurological disorders is placing growing pressure on the country’s healthcare system.

Neurological Disorders Becoming a Growing Health Challenge

Neurological disorders can affect movement, memory, speech, coordination and other essential functions. While some conditions are linked to ageing, others can affect people at younger ages and may require long-term medical care and rehabilitation.

Stroke remains one of the major neurological emergencies, requiring rapid diagnosis and treatment to reduce the risk of permanent disability or death. At the same time, conditions such as epilepsy, dementia and Parkinson’s disease often require prolonged care and regular specialist monitoring.

Shortage of Neurologists Creates Major Gap

Despite the rising demand for neurological care, India has a limited number of neurologists compared with its vast population. The shortage is particularly severe in rural and smaller towns, where patients may have to travel long distances to access specialist care.

This shortage can lead to delayed diagnosis, limited access to advanced treatment and increased pressure on existing specialists and major hospitals.

Growing Need for Specialist Care

The situation highlights the need to strengthen neurological healthcare services across the country. Expanding specialist training, improving medical infrastructure and increasing access to neurological care outside major cities could help address the growing gap.

Greater awareness among the public is also important, particularly for recognising warning signs of stroke and other serious neurological conditions at an early stage.

Early Diagnosis Can Make a Difference

Many neurological disorders can be better managed when diagnosed early. Symptoms such as sudden weakness, difficulty speaking, loss of balance, seizures, persistent severe headaches or changes in memory should not be ignored.

Timely medical attention can be particularly critical in emergencies such as stroke, where treatment delays can have serious consequences.

India Faces a Dual Challenge

The rising burden of neurological diseases and the shortage of specialists represent a major healthcare challenge for India. As the population ages and risk factors for conditions such as stroke and dementia increase, the demand for neurological services is likely to grow further.

Addressing the shortage of neurologists and expanding access to specialised care will be crucial to ensuring that patients receive timely diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
