Registration of New Voters and SVEEP Activities to Gain Fresh Momentum; Special Meeting Held with Heads of Schools and Colleges

Malerkotla, November 5:

The roots of democracy become stronger when the younger generation becomes aware of its voting rights and actively participates in the democratic process. With this objective, Assistant Commissioner Mandeep Kaur held a special meeting with the heads of schools and colleges across the district to encourage voter registration among young people and make SVEEP activities more effective.

On the occasion, the Assistant Commissioner informed that special camps would be organised on November 14, 15 and 29 to facilitate voter registration. She appealed to all eligible citizens, particularly young people registering as voters for the first time, to make maximum use of these camps.

She urged the heads of educational institutions to motivate eligible students who have attained the age of 18 years to get their names enrolled in the electoral rolls. She emphasised that registering as a voter is not merely a formal procedure but an important step towards understanding and fulfilling one’s responsibility towards democracy.

The Assistant Commissioner stated that under the SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) programme, awareness seminars, speech competitions, poster-making competitions, quizzes and other creative activities should be organised in schools and colleges so that young people can understand the importance of voting.

She further said that young people are important stakeholders in the democratic system. It is the need of the hour to create awareness among them so that they exercise their voting rights independently and wisely, without any fear, pressure or inducement.

Assistant Commissioner Mandeep Kaur made a special appeal to all district residents, particularly young people who have attained the age of 18, to take advantage of the special camps scheduled for November 14, 15 and 29 and get themselves registered as voters if they have not yet enrolled in the electoral rolls.

She also appealed to parents and teachers to motivate eligible young people in their families and educational institutions to register as voters.

She emphasised that ensuring that no eligible young person is left out of the electoral rolls is a collective responsibility of everyone.
