Court issues new directives in CM Mann fake video case

Jalandhar October 25, 2025  : In the fake video case of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the court has issued new orders. On Friday, the Mohali court directed major social media platforms—Meta platforms (Facebook and Instagram), YouTube, X Corporation, and Telegram—to remove all objectionable videos targeting Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann within 24 hours of receiving the court’s order. The court also attached a list of 166 specific URLs with its directive.

Judicial Magistrate First Class Manpreet Kaur, in her order, stated that the platforms must immediately take down the content related to those specific URLs and ensure that the action is completed within 24 hours of receiving the order. The court acted on a plea filed by the State Cyber Crime Department, S.A.S. Nagar, which argued that the fabricated content—likely AI-generated—was obscene and had the potential to disturb public order.

The court also issued special directions to Google (search engine) to ensure that the objectionable material is de-indexed and de-referenced so that it cannot be searched. Additionally, all platforms have been ordered to preserve the data and records related to the objectionable content to prevent evidence destruction.

The fake video was allegedly circulated from the account of Canadian resident Jagman Samra. After the video went viral, a case was registered against Samra. Although the video was initially deleted from Samra’s account, the court noted that some miscreants had started re-uploading or sharing the same or similar objectionable content across various platforms. Consequently, a detailed list of 166 such links was submitted to the court.

In its order, the court warned that if the social media intermediaries fail to comply, they will lose their legal immunity under the IT Act and may face legal action.

Summary :
The court has released fresh orders in the fake video case involving Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, outlining key legal directions and actions to be followed.
