Deputy Commissioner dismisses Bhakra Dam water release rumors, urges calm

Rupnagar, 20 Aug 2025 : Deputy Commissioner Rupnagar, Mr. Varjit Walia, informed that there is no need to panic or be afraid of rumors about water being released from the Bhakra Dam, as the water level in the Sutlej river is very low and well below the danger mark.

He stated that the decision to release water from the Bhakra Dam is taken by the Technical Committee. He further explained that today only 2 feet of the floodgates will be opened, through which merely 7,500 cusecs of water will be released. Additionally, about 6,500 cusecs of water will flow through the turbines. In total, around 45,000 cusecs of water will come out of the Bhakra Dam, of which 23,000 cusecs will be diverted into canals and only 22,000 cusecs will flow into the Sutlej river—less than half of the danger mark.

Mr. Varjit Walia assured that the residents of the district need not worry, as the water level in the Sutlej river is very low. At present, regulated water is being released to maintain capacity in case of heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh in the coming days.
