11 Sep 2025 : A major road accident in Mexico created panic on Wednesday night. A gas-filled tanker overturned on a National Highway (NH) and exploded with a huge blast. At least 3 people were killed in the incident, while more than 70 others were injured. The area plunged into chaos immediately, and 18 vehicles caught fire and were completely destroyed. Several of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.
How did the accident happen?
According to preliminary investigations, the gas tanker was traveling on the highway when it suddenly went out of control and overturned. Moments after the tanker flipped, it exploded violently. The blast engulfed nearby and passing vehicles in flames. The scene after the explosion was horrific, with smoke, screams, and burning vehicles all around.
Administration’s Response
Clara Brugada, Mayor of Mexico City, confirmed the accident and stated that emergency services immediately reached the site and began rescue operations. The fire brigade worked for several hours to control the fire. Out of more than 70 injured, 19 are in critical condition and have been admitted to nearby hospitals. Local authorities have begun an investigation into the cause of the accident.
Panic in Surrounding Areas
The explosion was so intense that its shockwaves were felt in nearby residential areas. People came out of their homes, and for a short while, electricity and traffic were disrupted across the area. Eyewitnesses reported flames shooting up to the sky, making visibility on the road nearly impossible.
Toll Plaza and Highway Closed
For safety reasons, the section of the highway where the accident occurred has been temporarily closed to traffic. Authorities have sealed all entry points around the toll plaza to ensure that rescue operations proceed without any hindrance.
