Meat, Egg Shops to Remain Shut on Mahavir Jayanti: DM Orders

Malerkotla, April 9 : District Magistrate of Malerkotla, Viraj S. Tirke, exercising the powers vested under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS), has issued orders to keep all meat, fish, and egg shops, street vendors, non-vegetarian hotels/dhabas, and liquor outlets closed within the jurisdiction of District Malerkotla on Thursday, April 10, on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti.

According to the SS Jain Sabha, Malerkotla, Mahavir Jayanti on April 10 is celebrated as a day of non-violence (Ahimsa Divas). On this day, animal slaughter is considered inauspicious as per religious customs. Slaughtering animals on this day may hurt the religious sentiments of the people and may be misused by anti-social elements. Considering the sensitivity of the matter, the District Magistrate has issued these orders for April 10 on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti.
