New Drug Successfully Cures Excessive Alcohol Consumption

Chandigarh, December 9, 2024 (Navroze Bureau)  Alcohol is never beneficial in any way. It harms our body in all aspects. If alcohol addiction becomes long-term, it can damage the liver. Thousands of people cause disturbances while under the influence of alcohol. Many cases of spousal conflicts and fights are taken to court. Families of alcoholics bear the most harm. Therefore, alcohol addiction causes damage in every way. In recent research, it has been proven that a medication can help break the habit of alcohol addiction. This medication is called the Peptide 1 Receptor (GLP-1RAs). Initially developed for weight loss, large-scale studies have shown that this drug can significantly reduce alcohol dependence, potentially helping people quit drinking. It has also been proven to benefit the kidneys and liver.

Alcohol consumption decreased by up to 29% in trial participants.

A study trial involved 88,190 people. These individuals were given weight-loss injections, including Exenatide, Dulaglutide, Liraglutide, Semaglutide, or Tirzepatide. Some participants received a placebo (a dummy drug). The study revealed that after several months, participants who received weight-loss medication showed a 29% reduction in alcohol consumption. Many of those who used to drink heavily also overcame their addiction. The study further found that those who took the weight-loss drug showed less damage to internal organs caused by alcohol, and alcohol-related diseases were reduced. According to the research, weight-loss injections reduce brain activity related to addiction and increase dopamine release. As a result, cravings for alcohol decrease. However, further research is required. After this, the drug might receive approval from drug regulatory agencies to help with alcohol addiction. Currently, the trial is ongoing.
