Delhi, December 5, 2024 (Navroze Bureau) – Many families swear by generational home remedies, especially when it comes to children’s health. One popular winter hack is to apply desi ghee on the nostrils during season change. Stuti Agarwal, a mom blogger, also claimed that applying just two drops of desi ghee on the nostrils helps fight seasonal illnesses like colds and coughs. “My son has constant cold and cough – especially when AQI gets bad – and while we are working on medicines, I went to a renowned ENT, Dr Prabodh Karnik, who asked me to apply some desi ghee on his nostrils every day. I respected it, but didn’t think much of it until my paediatrician @drpriyapradhan also suggested the same for this season change. When I told mom about this, she told me it’s an age-old remedy! I got curious,” she shared.
How is it used?
Warm the ghee slightly (make sure it’s not too hot) and apply a small amount at the entrance of each nostril using a clean fingertip or cotton bud. “Do this once or twice daily,” suggested Agarwal.
Does it work?
Dr Narendra Singhla, lead consultant, internal medicine at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, said that applying desi ghee to the nostrils is a traditional Ayurvedic practice known as “Nasya,” which involves administering herbal oils or ghee into the nasal passages to promote overall health and well-being. “This remedy has gained popularity in recent times due to its potential benefits.
According to Dr Singhla, its antimicrobial properties can also support respiratory health by combating infections and promoting clear breathing. “Additionally, desi ghee’s natural moisturising qualities help reduce dryness and discomfort in the nasal passages, providing relief from irritation,” said Dr Singhla.
What to note?
Use pure, high-quality ghee free from impurities and additives, stressed Dr Singhla.
“Warm the ghee gently before application and use a nasal dropper to administer 2-3 drops into each nostril. After application, sniff gently to allow the ghee to coat the nasal passages effectively,” said Dr Singhla.
While this practice may offer various benefits, “it is important to consult a healthcare professional before starting, particularly if you have underlying health conditions or allergies”, he cautioned.
