PAU’s KVK Sangrur holds seminar and field exhibition on stubble management

Dirba, October 27, 2025 : The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Sangrur, under Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, organized a one-day seminar and field exhibition on paddy stubble management at the adopted village Diwangarh in Dirba block. More than 60 farmers from the village and nearby areas participated in the event.

Dr. Rajbir Singh, Deputy Director General (Agricultural Extension), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, attended the program as the Chief Guest, while Dr. Parwinder Sheron, Director, ICAR–ATARI, Zone-1, Ludhiana, was present as the Guest of Honour.

During his interaction with farmers, Dr. Rajbir Singh emphasized the need to widely adopt in-situ paddy residue management techniques for sustainable agriculture and environmental protection. Dr. Parwinder Sheron highlighted the efficient utilization of stubble management machinery made available to farmers and Custom Hiring Centres (CHCs) under the CRM project.

Dr. Mandeep Singh, Incharge of KVK Sangrur, gave detailed information about the awareness, education, and communication activities being carried out under the CRM project. He encouraged farmers to abandon the practice of burning paddy stubble and explained its harmful effects.

Farmers expressed concerns regarding the high cost of subsidized stubble management machinery, the limited availability of balers to remove residue from fields, and the reluctance of baler owners to provide services outside their villages or at reasonable charges. They also raised apprehensions about a possible pink bollworm attack in wheat crops, for which KVK scientists provided detailed preventive guidance.

Teams from KVK Sangrur and KVK Patiala provided farmers with technical information on Rabi (winter) crops. Officials from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Sangrur, were also present at the event. The village Gram Panchayat honored the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour and assured that no stubble burning would take place in the village.

In conclusion, Dr. Sunil Kumar and Dr. Rukinder Preet Singh successfully demonstrated Happy SeederSmart Seeder, and Mulcher machines for wheat sowing in paddy residue at the field of S. Makhan Singh. Sarpanch S. Gursewak Singh, S. Gurcharan Singh, S. Kuldeep Singh, and S. Gurpreet Singh worked diligently to make the event a success.
