Punjab braces for impact as Cyclone Michaung approaches; IMD issues fresh weather alert

October 30, 2025: The impact of Cyclone Michaung has started reaching Punjab as well. Cold winds have engulfed the state, leading to a sudden drop in temperature in several districts. However, weather conditions are expected to change today, which may result in a rise in both temperature and pollution levels. Some districts are likely to remain cloudy during this period.

According to the Meteorological Department, winds are blowing from the north to the northeast. In central Punjab, these winds are shifting northward, which has helped reduce pollution levels in Bathinda and Amritsar — where the AQI has dropped below 100. However, the situation in central Punjab remains concerning.

In Jalandhar, Khanna, and Ludhiana, pollution levels have risen sharply due to changing wind patterns. It is estimated that today, winds will blow northward across central Punjab in the first half of the day and shift southwest in the latter half. This change could worsen the pollution situation further.

Due to the cyclonic storm, winds from Himachal Pradesh are moving downward, causing the state’s temperature to drop by 0.6°C, while the minimum temperature has decreased by 0.2°C. The highest temperature was recorded in Faridkot at 32.2°C. However, the situation is expected to change today.

With the shift in wind direction, temperatures in most cities could rise by up to 1°C. The Meteorological Department stated that due to an active western disturbance, clouds are likely to cover the skies after November 6. Light cold is being felt across Punjab during mornings and evenings.

Dr. Madan Khichar, Head of the Meteorological Department at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, said that due to the partial impact of the western disturbance, the weather in Haryana, Punjab, and Chandigarh will generally remain dry from October 30 to November 2, with a slight increase in daytime temperature and a slight drop at night. He further mentioned that during this period, northern and northwesterly winds are expected to resume, blowing at light to moderate speeds. This morning, the temperature in Haryana was recorded at 19°C.

Summary :
The India Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert for Punjab as Cyclone Michaung is expected to influence the region, bringing cloudy skies, gusty winds, and moderate rainfall in coming days.
