Punjab Government Adds 2,800 Fair Price Shops to Benefit 5.5 Lakh Ration Card Holders

16   july 2026 (Navroze Bureau) :    The Punjab Government has announced the addition of 2,800 new ration depots, a move expected to benefit around 5.5 lakh ration card holders across the state. The expansion aims to improve access to subsidised food grains and strengthen the public distribution system.

The new depots are expected to make the distribution of essential commodities more accessible, particularly for beneficiaries living in rural and underserved areas.

Improving Access to Ration

With the addition of new depots, beneficiaries will have more points from which to collect food grains and other essential supplies under government welfare schemes. The move is also expected to reduce the distance many ration card holders travel to access their entitlements.

Focus on Welfare Delivery

The Punjab Government has been focusing on expanding the reach of welfare schemes and improving last-mile delivery. Officials said the new ration depots will help ensure that eligible beneficiaries receive their benefits more efficiently.

The expansion is expected to provide greater convenience to millions of people dependent on the public distribution system.

5.5 Lakh Beneficiaries to Gain

Around 5.5 lakh ration card holders are expected to benefit from the addition of the 2,800 depots. The initiative is likely to particularly help families in areas where access to existing ration distribution centres has been limited.
