Punjab Revises Property Tax Rules: New Assessment, Rebates, Penalties and Deadlines

Amritsar 22 Sep 2025 : The Punjab government has announced a 10% discount on property tax payments until September 30, which people are actively availing. To make it easier for citizens, the Municipal Corporation Commissioner has instructed that offices remain open even on holidays for property tax collection. In the current financial year, the corporation has already recovered ₹21.80 lakh in property tax.

The Commissioner has directed all officials of the Property Tax Department that every superintendent and inspector should tighten their efforts in their respective areas and maximize recovery. The department’s teams are focusing more on commercial establishments for this purpose. This year, compared to last year, property tax recovery has also increased.

Poor financial condition of the corporation

At present, the financial condition of the Municipal Corporation is quite poor. Employees have been repeatedly issuing notices regarding non-payment of salaries and have even threatened to go on strike. Meanwhile, the corporation administration is pushing all its departments to boost recovery. Whether it is the Water Supply and Sewerage Department or the Trade License Department, instructions have been issued to enhance collections.

Summary: Punjab has reformed property tax regulations for 2025–26, shifting to DC rate-based assessments, offering early payment rebates, and setting staggered penalties for late payments.
