Ludhiana 15 Sep 2025: The Punjab government had introduced an easy registration process in tehsils to make things convenient for people, aiming to prevent any issues inside the tehsil offices and curb corruption. However, contrary to expectations, since the launch of the easy registration system, people have been facing significant difficulties, and tehsils now often appear nearly empty.
Earlier, at the East Tehsil in Transport Nagar of the city, around 400 registrations were completed daily. After the implementation of the easy registration system, this number has dropped to just 40. Previously, people could get their registration done within 1–2 days by taking an appointment. Now, appointments must be booked 48 hours in advance, followed by verification of the registration. If no objections are found, the registration proceeds, but if there are issues, the process can take several weeks, causing inconvenience to the public.
To assist people, the Punjab government has posted staff in tehsils, but in the past three months at the East Tehsil in Transport Nagar, only 10 people have availed themselves of staff assistance for registration. This indicates that instead of relief, the easy registration system has caused more problems. Whereas tehsils were previously crowded from morning to evening, now chairs remain empty throughout the day.
Deployment of Untrained Staff
The difficulties are further compounded by the posting of untrained employees. The Punjab government had instructed a complete overhaul of tehsil staff to make offices corruption-free. As a result, registry clerks and other employees were transferred to different government offices, and government office employees were posted in tehsils—most of whom have no prior experience. Due to their lack of knowledge, work in the tehsils is proceeding very slowly. Previously, employees were experienced in checking registrations and printing documents, but now many problems are arising due to the lack of training among new staff.
Significant Losses to the Government
Since the implementation of the easy registration system, only 50–60 registrations are being completed daily, compared to 300–400 earlier. The government used to earn ₹80–90 lakh per day from registrations, including government fees, stamp paper charges, and appointment fees. With only 40–50 registrations happening daily now, the government is incurring significant financial losses, while people are facing even more difficulties instead of getting relief.
Summary: Punjab government announced that tehsils will remain open throughout the day for registry-related services, impacting residents and streamlining processes for property registration and document verification.
