Rain Alert Issued in Punjab; Evening Storms May Hit Several Districts

 04 June 2025 : With the arrival of the monsoon across the country, the weather has taken a turn. Heavy rainfall is occurring in several states. The Meteorological Department has warned that over the next few days, many states may continue to experience heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds.

The weather will remain unfavorable in Northern and Northeastern India. Several districts in Punjab may experience rain accompanied by strong winds this evening. According to the Meteorological Department, between June 4 and 6, heavy rainfall is likely in states like Punjab, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The IMD stated that heavy rain is expected in Uttarakhand from June 4 to 5, and in Punjab and Haryana from June 4 to 6.

Rainfall occurred in several areas of Punjab last night. After dust storms and high winds, rain and hail provided some relief from the intense heat. In the Faridkot and Fazilka areas, hailstorms followed by strong rain were reported. Weather experts have forecasted rain with strong winds at several places in the state today (Wednesday).

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for 11 states including Assam, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. These areas may experience light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, and lightning. According to the IMD forecast, winds may blow at speeds of 50–60 km/h in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, with some areas possibly experiencing storms at speeds up to 70 km/h. A dust storm warning has also been issued for western Rajasthan.

Other affected states include Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Jharkhand, where the weather may worsen in the next 24 to 48 hours. The situation is particularly serious in Northeast India. Due to heavy rains, flooding and landslides have claimed the lives of 36 people so far. Assam alone has reported 11 deaths in addition to Arunachal Pradesh (10), Meghalaya (6), Mizoram (5), Sikkim (3), and Tripura (1).

The IMD has warned that rain may continue in most parts of the Northeast for the next 7 days, with very heavy rain likely in some areas on June 4. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the most affected district, Lakhimpur, and assured affected people of every possible help.
