Chandigarh, December 27, 2024 : There is a severe cold wave across the country. The situation is worsening due to the cold in states of northern India, including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi NCR. Along with the cold, dense fog is affecting the plains of northern and northwestern states. The Meteorological Department has issued a rain alert for some states. Heavy winds with rain are expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on December 27 and 28. The Meteorological Department predicts that the year will begin with record-breaking cold. Light rain is occurring in most areas of Punjab at the moment, and this pattern may continue for a few more days.
The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for three days of rain, severe cold, and dense fog in Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR. The department stated that the next two days—December 27 and 28—are crucial for Delhi-NCR, with heavy rain expected along with strong winds (storm-like conditions) and a red alert for heavy rainfall. This rain could bring a cold wave to the national capital. The minimum temperature at the end of the year could drop to 4 to 5 degrees Celsius. Due to a Western Disturbance causing snowfall in the mountains, strong northern and northwestern winds have reached the plains, making life difficult for the people.

The Meteorological Department has issued a rain alert for the entire country. Heavy rainfall is expected in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and coastal Andhra Pradesh. A rain alert has also been issued for the plains of northern India. On December 27 and 28, heavy snowfall is expected in the mountains. Winds of 30 to 50 kilometers per hour are expected in the plains, further lowering the temperature. According to the department, rain with strong winds is likely in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, western Uttar Pradesh, eastern Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and parts of Punjab. Over the last 24 hours, the weather in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand has remained mostly dry. Cold wave conditions persist in Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, with temperatures several degrees below normal.
Conditions in Other States:
From Punjab to West Bengal, severe cold has affected people, though conditions are slightly better in some parts of southern Bihar. The cold is worsening in Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and many parts of Maharashtra after rainfall. A cold wave continues in the northeastern states. In Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir, snowfall has triggered a cold alert.
