Rohit Sharma Requests BCCI to Retain His Captaincy

Chandigarh, January 13, 2025 : Discussions around Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma have been ongoing for the past few months. During the Test series against Australia, pacer Jasprit Bumrah took over as captain in the first and final matches. After excluding himself from the playing XI in the Sydney Test, rumors of his retirement began circulating. Rohit Sharma personally addressed these rumors, dismissing them as baseless. Now, reports suggest that he has expressed a desire to remain captain for a few more months. During the BCCI review meeting, Jasprit Bumrah’s name was proposed as the next captain.

Rohit Sharma has reportedly conveyed his wish to continue leading the team for a little longer while allowing the board time to search for a suitable successor. He has assured full support for whoever is selected as his replacement. According to a report by Dainik Jagran, on January 12, Sunday, Rohit met with BCCI officials in Mumbai for a review meeting of the Australia tour. The meeting was attended by India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

The report states that the 37-year-old Rohit, who led India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, expressed his wish to remain captain for a few more months. During the meeting, star pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s name was proposed as his successor. However, questions were raised about Bumrah’s fitness following his injury during the Sydney Test. Bumrah is currently dealing with a back injury, casting doubt on his long-term captaincy prospects.
