Tim Cook Praises India’s Role in iPhone Production, Responds to Trump’s Criticism

4 Aug 2025 : Apple CEO Tim Cook has made a significant statement regarding India, which is being seen as a direct response to recent allegations made by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Cook revealed that most iPhones sold in the U.S. during the last quarter (Q2) were manufactured in India. This statement comes despite Trump’s criticism of Apple’s manufacturing policy in India.

India becomes a major hub for iPhone production
Speaking to analysts, Tim Cook said, “Just like the previous quarter, most iPhones sold in the U.S. this time were made in India.” He further clarified that Apple has made a major shift in its manufacturing strategy. India has now become a key production center for iPhones destined for the U.S. market, while China is focusing more on non-U.S. markets.

Vietnam becomes a new base for other Apple products
Apple has now started manufacturing products like MacBooks, iPads, and Apple Watches in Vietnam to meet the demand in the U.S. market. This shift is part of Apple’s “China Plus One” strategy aimed at reducing dependency on China.

Trump’s dissatisfaction and tariff dispute
In May this year, Donald Trump expressed disapproval of Apple’s manufacturing operations in India during a meeting with Tim Cook. Recently, he also announced a 25% tariff on goods imported from India. Although smartphones and other electronic devices are currently exempt, experts believe that such products may also be subject to tariffs in the future.

Record growth in Apple sales in India
Tim Cook stated that India is not only a manufacturing hub for Apple but also an emerging major market. He said, “We’ve seen double-digit growth in iPhone sales in markets like India, the Middle East, South Asia, and Brazil.” In the June quarter, Apple recorded all-time revenue highs in over 24 countries, including India.

Global impact of tariffs
Tim Cook revealed that tariff-related costs reached around $800 million in the June quarter. If global tariff policies remain unchanged, this impact could rise to $1.1 billion in the September quarter.

Summary:
Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed most iPhones sold in the U.S. are made in India, subtly countering Trump’s push for U.S.-only manufacturing policies.
