Akali Dal Suffers Setback as Taksali Families Shift Allegiance to AAP

Khanna 13 Aug 2025 :  A major setback for the Akali Dal in Punjab politics from Khanna — families from Mohanpur village, who had held the Akali flag high for three decades, have now bid farewell to the party. Led by the village sarpanch, Paramjit Kaur, dozens of families including Charanjit Singh, Harminder Singh, Jasvir Singh, Babbi, Bhag Singh, and Harpal Singh formally joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), shaking the old roots of the Akali Dal.

During the joining ceremony, Punjab Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond warmly welcomed the new members and announced a grant of ₹10 lakh for the village’s development. Minister Sond said that due to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s honest and people-centric policies, more and more people are associating with AAP. The unanimous decision of Mohanpur villagers to switch parties is a stamp of trust in their work.

Charanjit Singh, who joined AAP, clearly stated that Minister Sond’s commitment to development and his close connection with the people had won them over. Jasvir Singh expressed his feelings, saying, “For three decades, we stood by the Akali Dal, but seeing the party’s current condition and lack of direction, we had to take this step today.”

In recent years, the Akali Dal’s support from rural areas — once its stronghold — has been slipping. The mass shift of a village like Mohanpur to AAP is not just a political change, but a strong message that people are prioritizing development and honest politics.

This major defection has not only brought a new twist to Khanna’s political scene but could also become a worrying sign for the Akali Dal in the upcoming block committee and zila parishad elections.

The event was also attended by OSD Karan Arora, Arhtiya Association President Harbans Singh Rosha, Khanna Market Committee Chairman Jagtar Singh Gill Rattanheri, Councillor Parmpreet Singh Pompi, former councillor Rajinder Singh Jeet, and Master Avtar Singh Dahiru.

Summary:
In a political setback for Akali Dal, several traditional Taksali families have resigned from the party and joined Aam Aadmi Party, altering Punjab’s political dynamics.
