FIFA Warns AIFF: Ratify Constitution by Oct 30 or Face Ban

26 Aug 2025 : The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is once again under the scanner of international football bodies after FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) jointly issued a stern warning, setting an October 30, 2025 deadline for the ratification of its new constitution. Failure to comply could result in a ban on Indian football, jeopardizing both national and club-level participation in international competitions.

Background of the Dispute

The AIFF has been working to finalize and adopt a new constitution that aligns with FIFA and AFC statutes. However, repeated delays, disagreements among stakeholders, and ongoing legal tussles have stalled the process.

FIFA and AFC officials have stressed that unless the revised constitution is adopted by the General Body of AIFF before the deadline, India risks immediate suspension. Such a suspension would prevent the Indian national team, clubs, and officials from taking part in international tournaments and governance structures.

What Is at Stake?

If the suspension comes into effect, Indian football could face severe consequences. The men’s and women’s national teams would be barred from playing official friendlies and qualifiers under FIFA’s calendar. Indian clubs participating in AFC competitions—including the AFC Cup and AFC Champions League—would also lose their slots.

Moreover, a ban would have long-term implications for sponsorship, player development, and fan engagement, derailing the momentum Indian football has built in recent years.

FIFA-AFC Statement

In a joint communication, FIFA and AFC reiterated their commitment to supporting Indian football but made it clear that adherence to governance reforms is non-negotiable. The statement read:
“We urge AIFF to ratify the constitution by October 30, 2025. Failure to do so will compel us to consider suspension in accordance with FIFA Statutes. Indian football must demonstrate full compliance with international governance standards.”

AIFF’s Response

AIFF officials have acknowledged the seriousness of the situation but expressed optimism that the deadline will be met. According to sources, the federation’s leadership is working with state associations and legal advisors to iron out differences and secure approval during its next General Body meeting.

One AIFF official noted: “We are fully committed to ensuring compliance. The constitution will be finalized and ratified before the October 30 deadline. Indian football cannot afford another setback.”

History Repeating Itself?

This is not the first time Indian football has faced such a crisis. In August 2022, FIFA briefly suspended AIFF citing “undue influence from third parties.” The ban was lifted only after a Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators stepped aside and governance reforms were initiated.

Observers warn that another suspension could tarnish India’s credibility in global football and discourage investors in domestic leagues like the Indian Super League (ISL) and I-League.

The Road Ahead

All eyes are now on the AIFF’s General Body. Successful ratification of the constitution would not only avert the ban but also pave the way for stronger governance, transparency, and smoother functioning of Indian football. Failure, however, could plunge the sport into yet another period of uncertainty.

Summary

FIFA and AFC have set an October 30 deadline for AIFF to ratify its new constitution. Failure could trigger a suspension, barring India’s teams and clubs from international football.
