Punjab to witness heavy rainfall; Meteorological Department issues yellow alert

29 Aug 2025 : For the past several days, Punjab has been experiencing continuous rainfall, leading to flooding in many areas. Several villages have been devastated by rising waters, and people are finding it difficult to step out of their homes. Due to major changes in weather, livelihoods have come to a standstill, affecting a large number of people. In Himachal’s upper regions, heavy rainfall has increased the water flow into Gobind Sagar Lake of the Bhakra Dam and Pong Dam.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued another heavy rainfall alert for Punjab. According to the alert, moderate to heavy rains are expected in different districts of Punjab from August 29 to September 1, for which a ‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued. On August 29, the situation could be more serious, as heavy rainfall is predicted for today.

It is important to note that the water level of the Bhakra Dam has reached 1671.80 feet, while the Pong Dam has crossed the danger mark. Considering safety, the BBMB authorities released 1,04,989 cusecs of water from the Pong Dam into the Beas River. Additionally, due to continuous water release from Bhakra Dam, Pong Dam, and Madhopur Headworks in Pathankot, hundreds of villages in Ferozepur, Fazilka, Kapurthala, Sultanpur Lodhi, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur, and Dera Baba Nanak areas have been submerged under water up to 7 feet deep.

Summary: The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall across Punjab for the next four days, issuing a yellow alert statewide.
