October 8, 2025 : The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has imposed a one-year suspension on Aman Sehrawat, the Paris Olympics bronze medallist, effective from the date of a show-cause notice, after he failed to make weight in the men’s freestyle 57 kg category at the Senior World Championships.
Sehrawat was disqualified from the competition for exceeding the weight limit by 1.7 kilograms on the day of weigh-in. Despite having reported to an accumulation training camp in Poreč, Croatia from 25 August 2025, he failed to reduce his weight to the required limit.
WFI had issued a show-cause notice on September 23 asking Sehrawat to explain the lapse. His response, received on September 29, was reviewed by the Disciplinary Committee but found “unsatisfactory.”
According to the federation’s statement, the decision also reflects concerns over discipline and professionalism. As an Olympic medallist, Sehrawat is expected to maintain strict adherence to norms, especially in weight management for competitions. The failure to do so not only cost him participation but is seen as tarnishing the image of Indian wrestling on the global stage.sanctioned by the WFI for the full one-year term.
WFI has also asked the coaching staff—including chief coach Jagmander Singh and support staff Vinod, Virender, and Narender—to explain how weight monitoring failed in the run-up to the event. The federation highlighted that Sehrawat had been in the camp well before the competition, which by its rules should have given him sufficient time to maintain or manage weight.
In his explanation, Sehrawat reportedly cited illness as a factor affecting his ability to cut weight. However, the Disciplinary Committee did not find this reason sufficient.
This suspension is a serious setback for Sehrawat and for Indian wrestling. With important events coming up, like the 2026 Asian Games, missing out on a year of competition could affect his form, ranking, and chances to represent India.
Summary
Aman Sehrawat is suspended for one year by the WFI after failing to make weight (1.7 kg over) at Senior World Championships. His explanation was deemed unsatisfactory.
