Measles Outbreak In Bangladesh May Worsen As Holiday Travel And Vaccination Gaps Fuel Spread

2 June 2026 (Navroze Bureau) :   Health experts in Bangladesh have warned that the country’s ongoing measles outbreak could intensify in the coming weeks, driven by large-scale Eid holiday travel, immunity gaps among children, and incomplete vaccination coverage.

Bangladesh is currently battling one of its most severe measles outbreaks in decades, with cases reported across most districts of the country and thousands of children affected. The majority of infections have occurred among children under the age of five.

Why Doctors Expect More Cases

According to public health experts, millions of people traveled across Bangladesh during the Eid holidays, increasing the likelihood of infected individuals carrying the virus from urban centers to rural communities. Large family gatherings and crowded transport networks can accelerate transmission of the highly contagious disease.

Measles is among the world’s most infectious diseases. Health authorities note that one infected person can transmit the virus to up to nine out of ten susceptible individuals who come into close contact with them.

Vaccination Gaps A Major Concern

The World Health Organization has linked the outbreak to declining routine immunization coverage and immunity gaps that have left many children vulnerable to infection. Achieving herd immunity requires about 95% coverage with two doses of the measles vaccine, a target that has not been consistently met in some areas.

Experts say disruptions to vaccination campaigns in recent years, including delays in special immunization drives, contributed to the accumulation of susceptible children.

Children Under Five Most Affected

Health data show that children younger than five account for the overwhelming majority of reported cases, with many infections occurring among unvaccinated or partially vaccinated children. Infants are particularly vulnerable because some are too young to receive routine vaccination.

Scale Of The Outbreak

Bangladesh has recorded tens of thousands of suspected measles cases and thousands of laboratory-confirmed infections in 2026. Hundreds of suspected and confirmed measles-related deaths have also been reported, placing significant strain on hospitals and healthcare services.

Government Response

Authorities have launched emergency measles-rubella vaccination campaigns, deployed rapid response teams, strengthened disease surveillance, and expanded public awareness efforts to contain the outbreak. International agencies including WHO and UNICEF are supporting response measures.

Symptoms And Prevention

Measles typically causes:

  • High fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red eyes
  • Characteristic skin rash

Health experts emphasize that vaccination remains the most effective protection against the disease and its potentially serious complications.

Public Health Warning

Doctors are urging parents to ensure children receive both recommended vaccine doses and seek medical care promptly if symptoms appear. Experts warn that without sustained vaccination efforts and rapid outbreak control measures, Bangladesh could see a further rise in infections in the weeks ahead
