Ferozepur, July 31, 2026:
The Punjab Government led by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which claims to be “revolutionary,” is increasingly being accused of failing to uphold democratic values. On the martyrdom day of Shaheed Udham Singh—a day of great historical and emotional significance—Punjab Police allegedly conducted early morning raids at the homes of computer teacher leaders who were preparing to raise their legitimate demands, exposing what teacher organizations described as the government’s “anti-people” and “authoritarian” approach.
According to available information, the Computer Teachers’ Union Punjab had planned a large-scale statewide protest today outside the Sunam residence of AAP Punjab President and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora. In an attempt to prevent the peaceful demonstration and suppress the voices of the teachers, police reportedly carried out raids at around 5:00 a.m.
In Ferozepur, State Union leader Harjit Singh Sandhu was allegedly confined to his home. Similarly, in Patiala, state leader Parmveer Singh was also placed under house arrest. In Bathinda, police reportedly detained several union leaders, including state leader Jony Garg, at their homes to prevent them from participating in the protest at Sunam.
The government’s actions and the police operation have sparked widespread anger among the teaching community across Punjab. All teachers’ organizations in Ferozepur district strongly condemned what they described as the government’s authoritarian attitude and the police’s coercive actions.
Teacher leaders Sukhjinder Singh Khanpur, Malkit Singh Haraj, Harjit Singh Sidhu, Parmjit Singh Pamma, Balram Sharma, Jagsir Singh Gill, Hardeep Singh Toor, Sarabjit Singh Bhawra, Lakhwinder Singh Simak, and Shalinder Kamboj stated that the government, which came to power promising change and revolution, is now suppressing teachers instead of listening to their legitimate demands.
They said that placing teacher leaders under house arrest on the martyrdom day of Shaheed Udham Singh is an attack on democratic values and reflects the government’s growing intolerance and desperation. According to the leaders, the Computer Teachers’ Union has been struggling for a long time for the merger of computer teachers into the Education Department with full service benefits, implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission, and fulfillment of other long-pending legitimate demands.
The leaders further alleged that before the elections, senior AAP leaders had promised that the demands of computer teachers would be fulfilled in the very first Cabinet meeting. However, after assuming power, the government has allegedly failed to honor those commitments. Instead of resolving the issues through dialogue, they claimed, the government has shut the doors for discussion and is attempting to suppress the movement through police action.
The Ferozepur teachers’ organizations demanded that the government immediately stop conducting raids at the homes of computer teachers, release all leaders who have been placed under house arrest, and accept all the legitimate demands of the Computer Teachers’ Union without further delay.
They also warned that if the government continues to suppress the democratic voice of teachers, teachers and allied organizations across Punjab will unite to launch a more intensified statewide agitation, for which they said the Punjab Government and the local administration would be solely responsible.
