26 Aug 2026 (Navroze Bureau) : The Punjab BJP is facing an unusual situation ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, with the party’s organisational leadership publicly preparing for a solo contest while speculation over a possible alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) continues in political circles.
Santosh Tells Cadre to Prepare for All 117 Seats
BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santosh, during his two-day Punjab tour, told party workers that the BJP would contest all 117 Assembly seats and seek to form the next government on its own.
He also pushed workers to strengthen the party at the grassroots level, with particular emphasis on booth-level organisation, panna pramukhs and greater field outreach.
The message effectively asks the state unit to prepare as though there will be no alliance with the Akalis.
But Alliance Speculation Refuses to Go Away
At the same time, reports of a possible BJP-SAD reunion have continued to circulate.
The two parties were long-time allies but parted ways in 2020 after the SAD withdrew from the BJP-led NDA over the now-repealed farm laws. Neither side has formally announced a renewed alliance.
Reports indicate that backroom discussions over a possible tie-up are continuing at different levels despite Santosh’s public emphasis on a solo contest.
Why BJP Workers Are Confused
The mixed signals have created uncertainty among sections of the BJP’s grassroots cadre.
If the party eventually reaches an agreement with the SAD, some constituencies prepared for BJP candidates could instead be allotted to Akali candidates.
One BJP leader told The Tribune that booth workers could find it difficult to invest time and resources in building the party in a constituency without knowing whether the eventual candidate would be from the BJP or the Akali Dal.
BJP Wants to Build Its Own Base
The BJP’s official line is that feedback from its zonal meetings has largely favoured fighting the 2027 elections independently.
Santosh’s organisational instructions appear designed to strengthen the BJP’s independent electoral machinery rather than rely on its former ally.
The party is also trying to expand its presence beyond the constituencies where it traditionally depended on the SAD’s organisational network.
SAD Reunion Still a Political Possibility
Despite the solo-contest message, political developments have kept the alliance question alive.
The possibility of a renewed partnership has been discussed amid the BJP’s efforts to expand in Punjab and the SAD’s attempt to regain political ground ahead of the Assembly elections.
Neither party, however, has formally confirmed a seat-sharing arrangement.
Leadership Reshuffle Adds to Internal Tensions
The uncertainty over the electoral strategy comes alongside some discontent within the Punjab BJP.
The Tribune reported that Santosh’s Punjab tour was also aimed at pacifying leaders unhappy with a recent reshuffle of party office-bearers. Senior BJP leader Tikshan Sud and some supporters had expressed dissatisfaction over organisational appointments, while Subash Sharma was also reported to be unhappy over appointments in his parliamentary constituency.
Opposition Seizes on the Contradiction
Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring has criticised the BJP over the conflicting signals.
Warring challenged the BJP to publicly commit that it would not ally with the SAD, arguing that the party’s solo-contest announcement could be aimed at keeping its cadre together while alliance talks continue.
The 2027 Battle Takes Shape
The BJP’s push to contest all 117 seats represents a significant ambition for a party seeking to establish itself as a stronger independent force in Punjab.
But if an alliance with the SAD is eventually revived, the BJP would have to adjust its candidate preparations, constituency strategy and organisational plans accordingly.

For now, the BJP’s working strategy is clear: prepare for all 117 seats and strengthen the organisation from the booth level.
Whether that remains the final electoral arrangement will depend on how discussions with the SAD develop in the months ahead. Until a formal pact is announced, Punjab BJP workers are effectively being asked to prepare for a solo battle while keeping the alliance possibility in mind.
