With the objective of spreading the teachings of the great 12th-century Sufi saint Baba Sheikh Farid Ji—humility, gentleness, simplicity and returning good for evil—to every corner of the world, the annual Baba Farid Aagman Purab is being celebrated in Faridkot from September 19 to 23. On the fifth day of the celebrations, a grand Nagar Kirtan was organized for the welfare of all.
Cabinet Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur, MLA Gurdit Singh Sekhon, Deputy Commissioner Rahul Chaba and SSP Gurbans Singh Bains specially participated in the Nagar Kirtan and paid obeisance at Tilla Baba Farid.
Cabinet Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur extended greetings to the residents of the district on Baba Farid Aagman Purab and said that everyone should draw inspiration from Baba Farid Ji’s teachings and incorporate them into their daily lives.
MLA Gurdit Singh Sekhon also extended greetings to the devotees and expressed hope that Baba Farid Ji would continue to shower his blessings on everyone. He said that people should listen to the Guru Sahib’s Gurbani and make their lives meaningful.
The Nagar Kirtan began from Gurdwara Tilla Baba Farid under the leadership of the Panj Pyare, accompanied by the recitation and singing of Baba Farid Ji’s divine bani. A beautifully decorated palki of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was placed on a specially prepared vehicle. Devotees standing along both sides of the route bowed their heads and showered flowers on the palki while praying for the welfare of all.
Throughout the route, devotees enthusiastically performed sewa by cleaning the streets ahead of the Nagar Kirtan. In addition, devotees set up various langars offering tea, sweets, fruits and other refreshments at several locations.
As the Nagar Kirtan, accompanied by the recitation of Baba Farid Ji’s bani, reached near the Deputy Commissioner’s residence, Deputy Commissioner Rahul Chaba offered a rumala to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and paid obeisance. Before this, the Deputy Commissioner had also served devotees with a langar of laddoos and tea outside his residence.
SDM Kotkapura Rajinder Singh was also specially present on the occasion. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all district residents for extending their cooperation to the district administration during the festival.
The grand Nagar Kirtan then proceeded through the city’s prominent intersections and eventually reached Gurdwara Mai Godri Sahib, where it took the form of a large religious congregation. On the occasion, renowned Ragi Jathas enthralled the devotees with their melodious kirtan.
