Punjab 14 May 2025 : Common people are about to receive a shock. The electricity bills for Delhi residents are going to increase. Consumers in Delhi will face a rise of 7 to 10 percent in their electricity bills for May-June. This increase has been made under the Power Adjustment Cost (PPAC), which was approved by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) for the three electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs) to collect from customers. PPAC is the amount collected due to an increase in fuel prices, such as coal and gas, by electricity production companies. It is added as a percentage to the fixed charge and energy charge (i.e., the units of electricity consumed) on the bill.
Approval for DISCOMs:
- BRPL: 7.25%
- BYPL: 8.11%
- TPDDL: 10.47%
After this decision, millions of customers in Delhi will have to pay hefty electricity bills during the summer. The United Residents of Delhi (URD) has criticized this decision, calling it arbitrary and legally incorrect. They also questioned why different PPAC rates are being applied to different DISCOMs when the fuel prices are almost the same. Without PPAC recovery, DISCOMs could face financial difficulties. This hike is sure to increase the burden on the pockets of electricity consumers in Delhi, especially during the summer season when electricity consumption is at its highest.
Summary: Punjab’s electricity tariffs for domestic consumers will remain unchanged for 2025-26, despite requests for an increase due to a revenue deficit.
