Akali Dal, BJP And Congress Responsible For Punjab’s Drug Menace: Arvind Kejriwal

15 June 2026 (Navroze Bureau) :  Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal has accused the Shiromani Akali Dal, Bharatiya Janata Party, and Indian National Congress of pushing Punjab into the grip of the drug menace through years of alleged misgovernance.

Addressing party workers and supporters during his Punjab visit, Kejriwal said successive governments led by these parties failed to effectively tackle the growing drug problem, which he described as one of the state’s most serious challenges.

Kejriwal Targets Previous Governments

The AAP leader alleged that Punjab witnessed a steady rise in drug-related issues during the tenure of previous governments and claimed that adequate action was not taken to dismantle drug networks operating across the state.

According to Kejriwal, the consequences of those policies continue to affect thousands of families.

AAP Highlights Anti-Drug Campaign

Kejriwal said the AAP government is committed to taking strict action against drug traffickers and organized criminal networks involved in the narcotics trade.

He highlighted the state’s ongoing anti-drug initiatives, including:

  • Police crackdowns on smugglers
  • Property seizures linked to drug crimes
  • Strengthening intelligence networks
  • Rehabilitation and de-addiction efforts

Opposition Rejects Allegations

Leaders from the Akali Dal, BJP and Congress have previously rejected similar accusations, arguing that the drug problem is a complex issue requiring collective efforts rather than political blame.

Opposition parties have also questioned the effectiveness of the current government’s anti-drug measures and demanded stronger results on the ground.

Drug Menace Remains Major Political Issue

The issue of drug abuse continues to be one of the most sensitive political and social concerns in Punjab. Successive governments have faced scrutiny over their handling of the problem, making it a recurring topic in state politics.

Focus On Youth Welfare

Kejriwal said protecting Punjab’s youth from addiction remains a top priority and emphasized the need for coordinated efforts involving law enforcement, education, healthcare, and community participation.

Political Significance

The remarks come amid intensified political activity in Punjab, with parties seeking to strengthen their positions ahead of future electoral contests.

Continuing Debate

As political parties trade allegations over responsibility for the drug crisis, the broader challenge of reducing drug abuse and rehabilitating affected individuals remains a key concern for policymakers and citizens alike.
