Brent and WTI Slip From Near Six-Month Highs as Houthi Attacks Keep Supply Risks in Focus

26 October 2026 (Navroze Bureau) Global crude oil prices declined on Monday, October 26, 2026, retreating from near six-month highs recorded late last week. However, concerns over potential supply disruptions remained elevated following continued Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and growing uncertainty surrounding energy infrastructure and regional security.

Brent crude futures fell 1.82% to $114.60 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude declined 2.07% to $101.13 per barrel by 0232 GMT, according to Reuters. The decline followed a sharp rally on Friday, when both benchmarks gained as attacks in Saudi Arabia heightened concerns about global oil supplies

Despite Monday’s retreat, crude prices remained elevated. Brent gained approximately 6% over the previous week, while WTI advanced 2.3%, reflecting concerns that further escalation in the Middle East could disrupt energy production and transportation.

Houthi Attacks Keep Supply Risks in Focus

The recent rise in oil prices has been linked to attacks claimed by Yemen’s Houthi movement against Saudi targets. The group said it had targeted a Saudi airport and oil facilities over the weekend, while Saudi Arabia reported intercepting additional missiles and drones.

Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s largest oil exporters, has faced renewed security concerns as tensions in the region continue. The attacks have raised questions about the safety of energy infrastructure and the potential for disruptions to crude production, exports and shipping routes.

Even though oil prices moved lower on Monday, traders continued to monitor developments closely. Any further attacks on energy facilities or critical shipping routes could renew upward pressure on prices, while signs of improved regional security could ease some supply concerns.

US Releases Oil From Strategic Petroleum Reserve

In a separate development, the US Department of Energy authorised the release of 400,000 barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The release was intended to address a supply disruption at a refinery in Louisiana, Reuters reported.

Strategic reserve releases can help manage temporary supply shortages, although the broader impact depends on the scale and duration of the disruption and the availability of replacement supplies.

Market participants are assessing whether such measures can ease short-term pressure while geopolitical uncertainty continues to influence oil prices.

What Falling Oil Prices Mean for India

Crude oil movements are particularly important for India because the country relies heavily on imported energy. A sustained increase in international oil prices can raise the import bill, put pressure on the rupee and add to inflationary risks.

Higher crude prices can also increase operating costs for aviation, transportation, logistics and other fuel-intensive industries. Oil marketing companies may face pressure depending on domestic fuel pricing, refining margins and the extent to which changes in international prices are passed on to consumers.

Monday’s decline could offer some temporary relief, but the price level remains high enough to keep energy costs in focus. Indian investors will therefore monitor Brent crude alongside currency movements, inflation expectations and broader market sentiment.

Oil Market Outlook

The near-term direction of crude oil prices will depend on developments in the Middle East, the extent of any supply disruptions and changes in global demand. Traders will also watch government responses and any additional measures designed to maintain the flow of energy supplies.

The fall in prices on Monday suggests some easing after last week’s rally, but it does not necessarily indicate that supply risks have disappeared. Continued attacks or disruptions could push prices higher again, while an improvement in security conditions and stable supplies could support further declines.

For now, the oil market remains sensitive to geopolitical developments, with investors balancing the latest price correction against the risk of further disruptions to global energy supplies.
