17 july 2026 (Navroze Bureau) : Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey, based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic, has drawn comparisons with India’s Ramayana because both stories explore themes of heroism, exile, loyalty, love, war and the long journey home.
While the two epics come from different cultures and traditions, their central themes and narrative structures reveal several striking similarities.
1. A Hero’s Long Journey Home
At the heart of both stories is a hero separated from home and loved ones.
In The Odyssey, Odysseus embarks on a long and dangerous journey after the Trojan War before attempting to return to Ithaca. In the Ramayana, Lord Rama undergoes exile and faces numerous challenges before returning to Ayodhya.
Both narratives turn the journey home into a test of courage, endurance and identity.
2. Separation From a Loved One
Both epics are driven by the separation of a central couple.
Odysseus is separated from Penelope for years, while Rama is separated from Sita after her abduction by Ravana. Their reunions become emotionally significant moments in their respective stories.
3. Mythical Worlds and Extraordinary Challenges
Both stories move beyond ordinary human experiences and feature supernatural forces, mythical creatures and extraordinary obstacles.
Odysseus encounters gods, monsters and magical dangers during his voyage, while Rama’s journey includes divine intervention, powerful warriors, demons and other supernatural elements.
4. The Struggle Between Good and Evil
The two epics also explore moral conflicts and battles between opposing forces.
The Ramayana presents the conflict between Rama and Ravana as a battle between righteousness and evil. The Odyssey, while structured differently, also explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, temptation and the struggle to restore order.
Different Epics, Universal Themes
Despite their cultural and narrative differences, both works demonstrate how ancient epics continue to influence modern storytelling. Themes such as love, loyalty, courage, sacrifice and the desire to return home remain universal.
Nolan’s adaptation is expected to bring Homer’s legendary tale to a new generation of audiences.
