22 September 2026 (Navroze Bureau) : Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have appointed former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach for the IPL 2027 season, bringing an end to Stephen Fleming’s long association with the franchise.
The five-time IPL champions confirmed Zaheer’s appointment on September 21, marking a major change in their coaching setup ahead of the next season. Zaheer will take over from Fleming, who served as CSK head coach from 2009 to 2026.
Zaheer Khan Takes Over From Fleming
Fleming’s departure closes an 18-year association with CSK. He became head coach in 2009 and was part of one of the most successful coaching eras in IPL history.
Under Fleming, CSK won five IPL titles and established themselves as one of the competition’s most successful franchises. His exit followed CSK’s failure to reach the playoffs for a third successive season, including the 2026 campaign.
Zaheer now inherits the responsibility of preparing the franchise for IPL 2027 and helping shape its next phase.
One-Year Contract Reported
According to The Indian Express, Zaheer has been given a one-year contract, with the possibility of an extension.
The appointment comes at a significant point for CSK, with the franchise looking to refresh its coaching structure while continuing to develop its existing core of players.
Zaheer’s Coaching Experience
Zaheer is not new to the IPL environment.
After retiring from international cricket, he worked with Mumbai Indians, serving as Director of Cricket Operations and later Head of Global Development. He subsequently joined Lucknow Super Giants as a mentor.
He also worked with young fast bowlers at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in 2026, giving him recent experience in player development and bowling preparation.
A Proven International Career
Zaheer brings considerable playing experience to the CSK dressing room.
He represented India in 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is, taking 610 wickets across international cricket. He was also India’s leading wicket-taker during the country’s successful 2011 ODI World Cup campaign, finishing the tournament with 21 wickets.
His experience of playing under pressure in major tournaments is expected to form an important part of his coaching credentials.
Connection With MS Dhoni
Zaheer’s appointment also has a connection with MS Dhoni, who led India to the 2011 World Cup title with Zaheer as a key member of the bowling attack.
According to The Indian Express, Dhoni recommended Zaheer’s name for the head-coach position. CSK’s management has also indicated that Dhoni remains available as a player.
The two have therefore moved from being teammates in India’s 2011 World Cup-winning side to working together at franchise level.
Ruturaj Gaikwad to Continue as Captain
CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is set to continue leading the team.
The IPL’s official website reported that Gaikwad will remain captain while Zaheer takes charge of the coaching role for the 2027 campaign.
This creates a new leadership structure combining Gaikwad’s role as captain with Zaheer’s responsibilities as head coach.
Focus on Young Players
CSK’s management has highlighted Zaheer’s experience in nurturing young talent as one reason behind the appointment.
CSK owner Rupa Gurunath said the former India pacer’s playing career and ability to develop young players made him a valuable addition to the franchise. Managing Director Kasi Viswanathan also praised Zaheer’s work with young fast bowlers and his understanding of the game.
