21 September 2026 (Navroze Bureau) : Pop star Ed Sheeran has spoken emotionally about the backlash surrounding his ongoing tour, saying that friends, family members and people he had known for years appeared to distance themselves from him amid the controversy involving rapper Macklemore.
Speaking during his concert at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Sheeran said the experience had been an extremely difficult week and that he had questioned whether his tour would continue or whether he would return to the stage.
Sheeran Breaks Down on Stage
Sheeran became emotional while addressing the crowd, saying that the controversy had made him realise who was standing by him.
He said many people had been urging him to cancel the tour, while some longtime friends and family members were “backing away”. At the same time, he pointed to the thousands of fans who continued buying tickets and attending his concerts.
Macklemore Removed From Tour
The controversy began after Macklemore, who was scheduled as an opening act on Sheeran’s tour, made pro-Palestinian comments during a performance.
Macklemore was subsequently removed from the tour. Sheeran has said the decision was ultimately made by the tour promoter, while reports have also linked the decision to pressure from stadium owners, including Robert Kraft.
Other Artists Leave the Tour
The fallout grew after several other musicians associated with the tour withdrew.
Among those who stepped away were Beoga, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Finneas, with Sheeran’s backing band also leaving amid the dispute over Macklemore’s removal.
The departures left Sheeran performing without the planned opening acts at his Philadelphia show.
Sheeran Addresses Gaza
During the same concert, Sheeran also addressed the wider political controversy.
He described the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic and unjustifiable” while also condemning the Hamas attacks of October 2023. He said he had never wanted to become an activist musician but felt drawn into a wider debate about freedom of expression.
Concern Over Venue Restrictions
Sheeran said he was particularly concerned about venues becoming involved in determining what performers can say or present on stage.
He expressed worry about venues pre-approving performers’ content and said he believed concerts should remain spaces where people with different viewpoints can attend and listen to music.
Tour Continues Despite Turmoil
Despite the controversy and departures, Sheeran continued with his scheduled performance in Philadelphia.
He thanked the approximately 50,000 fans who attended, describing the show as one of the most significant performances of his career despite the personal difficulties he said he had experienced during the week.
Macklemore Supports Palestinian Relief
Macklemore has continued to support Palestinian humanitarian causes amid the dispute.
According to reports, he pledged $1 million from tour-related proceeds toward Palestinian relief efforts and challenged Robert Kraft to match the contribution. Kraft and Sheeran have subsequently been reported as committing funds to humanitarian relief, though details of the contributions have varied across reports.
A Wider Debate Over Music and Politics
The controversy has developed into a broader discussion about the relationship between music, political expression and commercial venues.
Sheeran has maintained that his concerts are intended to be spaces centred on music, love, hope and unity, while also acknowledging that artists can become involved in political debates even when that is not their intention.
