Florida Plane Crash: Nine Dead After Bahamas-Bound Learjet 60 Plunges Into Residential Area Near Palm Beach County

2 November 2026 (Navroze Bureau)   A devastating plane crash in South Florida claimed nine lives after a private business jet travelling to the Bahamas crashed near a residential neighbourhood in Palm Beach County on Sunday, November 1, 2026. The aircraft, a Learjet 60, went down near Cresthaven in Greenacres, Florida, and burst into flames after hitting the ground close to a busy roadway.

All nine people aboard the aircraft were killed, US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed. The crash occurred at approximately 12:50 pm local time. Authorities said the aircraft had departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed towards North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.

The incident triggered a major emergency response, with firefighters, police and other emergency personnel rushing to the scene. Thick black smoke rose above the neighbourhood as flames engulfed the wreckage.

Aircraft Crashed Near Residential Area

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Learjet 60 crashed in a residential area near Cresthaven, close to Military Trail and 10th Avenue North.

Videos recorded by people travelling on nearby roads showed the aircraft descending rapidly before striking the ground and erupting into a massive fireball. The impact created a large crater and scattered debris across the roadway.

The aircraft appeared to narrowly miss nearby homes and passing vehicles. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis visited the area and described the incident as a devastating crash.

He said the aircraft appeared to be coming down like a missile and had left a large crater near the road.

Authorities initially reported no confirmed casualties on the ground. However, the crash damaged the roadway and prompted officials to close Military Trail in both directions between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North.

Pilot Reported Icing and Turbulence Before Crash

Initial information from air traffic control recordings has raised questions about the conditions faced by the aircraft shortly before the crash.

According to recordings reported by the Associated Press, the pilot had informed air traffic controllers about ice accumulating on the aircraft and moderate turbulence during the flight.

The crew initially described the icing as manageable but also reported that turbulence was affecting the aircraft. The pilot requested permission to climb to a higher altitude in an attempt to find smoother conditions.

The situation reportedly deteriorated rapidly after the aircraft encountered precipitation. Air traffic control recordings captured the crew reporting a sudden and extremely fast loss of altitude.

The pilot declared an emergency and issued a mayday call as the aircraft began descending at a dangerous rate.

In one of the final radio communications, the pilot reportedly warned controllers that the aircraft was going to crash into the ground.

Flight-tracking information indicated that the jet entered a steep descent, with its speed and rate of descent increasing dramatically before the signal was lost.

Although icing, turbulence and severe weather conditions are among the factors being examined, officials have not confirmed what caused the crash.

Around 600 Residents Evacuated

The crash also created safety concerns for people living close to the impact site. Palm Beach County authorities began evacuating approximately 600 residents from a nearby mobile-home community as emergency teams worked at the location.

The evacuation was carried out as a precaution while officials assessed the damage and secured the area.

Military Trail was closed to traffic, and motorists were advised to avoid the affected stretch and use alternative routes.

Emergency personnel continued working around the wreckage as investigators prepared to examine the aircraft and collect evidence.

Despite the aircraft crashing close to homes and a busy road, officials said there were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries among people on the ground.

FAA and NTSB Launch Investigation

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that it would support the investigation into the crash, while the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the inquiry.

Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft’s flight data, maintenance history, weather conditions and communications between the pilots and air traffic controllers.

The investigation will also look into the reported icing and turbulence, the aircraft’s sudden descent and the emergency procedures followed by the crew.

Aviation experts have cautioned against drawing conclusions before investigators complete their examination. Several technical and operational factors can contribute to an aircraft accident, and the available information does not establish a definitive cause.

The NTSB is expected to provide further updates as investigators gather evidence and analyse the circumstances surrounding the incident.

What Is a Learjet 60?

The Learjet 60 is a medium-sized business jet commonly used for private and corporate travel. The aircraft is manufactured by Bombardier and is designed for business and charter operations.

The plane involved in Sunday’s crash was a private aircraft that had taken off from Austin, Texas, for a flight to the Bahamas.

Authorities had not immediately released the identities of the nine people who died. Further information about the passengers and crew was expected to emerge as officials continued their investigation.

A Major Aviation Tragedy in Florida

The South Florida crash has raised fresh concerns about aviation safety after a private jet went down close to homes and a busy roadway.

The deaths of all nine people aboard have turned the incident into a major aviation tragedy, while the evacuation of hundreds of nearby residents highlighted the potential danger posed by aircraft accidents in populated areas.

With the FAA assisting the NTSB investigation, attention is now focused on determining why the Learjet entered a rapid descent and what happened during the final moments of the flight.

Officials have yet to establish the exact cause of the accident. Further details are expected as investigators examine the wreckage, flight recordings and weather data.
